The cable line laid in your yard is a temporary line connecting your home to Sparklight equipment on the outside of your home. In most cases, these underground lines are run when homes are built, but in some cases the line may need to be installed to establish service or replaced if the line has been damaged. These underground lines typically follow the same path as other utility service lines so we lay a temporary line until we can determine the location of other utility lines to safely dig and bury the permanent line. The following FAQs will walk you through what to expect if a cable needs to be buried at your residence.
Q. How long will it take to bury the cable?
A. The length of time it takes to schedule this service varies by location and season. In most areas, the lines are buried within 30-45 days, while in other areas it may take several weeks or months due to weather impacts, such as rain, snow, or freezing conditions
Q. How does the weather impact the time it takes to bury?
A. For example, in colder climates where the ground freezes our technicians need to wait until the ground thaws before we can bury the cable. In these areas, there can be a bit of a backlog once the ground thaws so it can take some time to get to all customers. We have dedicated staff hired specifically to complete this work and appreciate your patience while we work diligently to ensure your line is buried in a timely manner.
Q. Why does it take so long to have the cable buried? Why can’t you do it the same day?
A. There are many factors that play into the length of time it takes to bury the cable. The two biggest factors are weather, such as frozen ground and the length of time it takes your local utility company to come out and mark their lines.
Q. Why does local utility have to come out to mark my lines?
A. This is necessary to ensure we do not damage any utility lines during the process. This requires Sparklight to place an order with your local Dig Safe company, which will place an order with the utility companies to come out and mark the lines. Once the lines have been marked, we will be notified that we can begin work.
Q: Is the cable safe?
A: Yes. The cable is water/weather resistant so there is no need to worry if it rains or your sprinklers get it wet.
Q: Can I move the cable?
A: Yes. Feel free to move the cable line out of your way as needed, but please do NOT disconnect it.
Q. Is there anything I should do after the cable has been buried?
A. Yes! If the cable is buried in a location where there is typically vegetation, such as a lawn, we recommend you water the area heavily for 2 weeks after the line has been buried. As with any yard work, proper irrigation will allow for the grass to grow back as it was before.
