What are some tips for reducing my bandwidth usage for my high-speed internet service?
Please review the following sections for recommendations on how to better utilize your data usage.
Wireless
Ensure that your wireless network is secured with a strong password. This will help to ensure that only your computers and devices are connecting and not being used by a neighbor or anyone within range. By not securing your network with a strong password you open your internet and usage up to others within range.
If you are unsure where you locate your security key, please reference our support article Locating Wireless Security Key.
Video and Movies
Bandwidth usage is directly affected by the video quality of each program used: Standard Definition (SD), High Definition (HD), and Ultra High Definition (UHD or 4K). The higher the video quality, the more bandwidth it will use. Depending on your preferences, you may want to consider limiting your viewing experience to a lower quality to improve your bandwidth usage.
File Sharing
File sharing of pictures, music, movies and other large files (i.e. computer or software updates) via file sharing and torrent programs and websites count against your data usage allocation. It is advised that you ensure these programs are disabled when not actively using them as they commonly run in the background, allowing other users to download files from you that shows up as upload data.
