What is the CALM Act?
In the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (CALM) Act, Congress directed the FCC to establish rules which require commercials to have the same average volume as the programs they accompany on digital channels. The CALM Act does not apply to channels or commercials carried in analog, nor the volume between channels. The CALM Act went into effect on December 13, 2012.
Is Sparklight in compliance with the CALM Act?
Sparklight has installed the equipment to be in compliance with the CALM Act. We have installed software and hardware in each of our local markets to monitor the volume of commercials on our digital channels, ensuring they air at the same average volume as your regular digital programming.
Why are my commercials still too loud?
Sparklight is responsible for only a small portion of the commercials that run during your programs. While our commercials are currently in compliance, there may be commercials that are run by third party advertisers or national broadcasters which are not. If we are provided with information about a commercial (and the channel it is airing on) that seems to be too loud, we can investigate further to identify the source of the problem.
Who should I notify if I think my commercials are too loud?
Please email or write to Sparklight directly if you notice a commercial that seems to be too loud. If at all possible, please take note of the channel it aired on, the product advertised, and whether you use a set top box to view the channel, as this will help us identify the source of the problem and expedite a solution. Email should be directed to commercialvolume@cableone.biz or send us a letter to the following address:
